Keiondra’s Story: Starting the Career of Her Dreams

At 18, Keiondra knew her dream job was in the medical field. She started working with Hired when her high school counselor referred her to a Certified Nursing Assistant program with the help of MicroGrants, one of Hired’s key partners in granting assistance to those who need it most in the Twin Cities.

Keiondra was excited to meet with Tara, one of Hired’s Youth Employment Counselors, and eagerly prepped for her application interview for the MicroGrant. Keiondra’s dedication showed in her good grades and attendance, and she was quickly approved for the grant that started her toward the career of her dreams.

Keiondra began her CNA classes and coursework in January. She was a dedicated student and passed all parts of the state exam except one. Keiondra was disheartened when she found out she had to retake that section of the exam, but still she was confident she would succeed with a second chance.

“I KNEW I COULD DO IT, BUT TARA BELIEVED IN ME EVEN MORE THAN I BELIEVED IN MYSELF. SHE’S ALWAYS BEEN THERE FOR ME, WHETHER I NEEDED HELP WITH CLASSES OR JUST SOMEONE TO TALK TO.”

When the pandemic started, Keiondra’s exam was put on hold. Both Tara and Keiondra were disappointed at the news, but Tara continued to help Keiondra with her job search and training. Currently Keiondra works at a healthcare facility where she receives hands-on training and experience as a Direct Support Professional.

This fall Keiondra begins classes in St. Paul College’s Power of YOU Program, through which her first two years in college are tuition-free. Keiondra is delighted to receive individualized academic advising, career development workshops, and more through the program.

When I pass the last portion of the state exam, I’ll be a CNA,” says Keiondra, who adds, “but I won’t stop there!”
