Lamar's Story: From Suspect to Pillar

When Lamar came to Hired, he was job-hopping and life searching. After experiencing some traumatic events, he was trying to get himself together. As he was taking on more parenting responsibilities, he was also thinking about what changes would ensure a safer and more fulfilling future.

At Hired, Lamar didn’t feel judged. Employment counselor Dawn Trimarco worked with him to help put a plan and actions into place. Dawn focused on understanding him, his interests, and his goals. After being let down by various people in life, Lamar appreciated Dawn’s follow-through which led him to be more committed to making life changes. Lamar said he and Dawn spent time getting to know each other, and “ever since we’ve been walking side by side.”

I NEVER THOUGHT I COULD BE THE PERSON I AM.

Through Hired, Lamar was able to take on an internship as a community engagement specialist with a local organization. And he thrived in the position. He met people who encouraged him. New opportunities led him to different ways of thinking and living. He started visiting museums and attending events. He was motivated by working hard and earning a paycheck.

Lamar said that Hired helped him move from being a suspect to a pillar in the community. As he said, “The whole essence and vibe is different when I walk into places.” Working with Dawn was one of the greatest moves he made in his life, according to Lamar, and he’s committed to follow the new trajectory in life.
